Prof. Dr. Douwe Breimer

Douwe D. Breimer, Ph.D. is President of Leiden University, The Netherlands, since 2005, Rector Magnificus since 2001 and Professor of Pharmacology since 1975.
He qualified as a pharmacist at the University of Groningen in 1970 and obtained his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Nijmegen in 1974. His research interests are in the areas of pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, bio pharmaceutics and the relationships between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; he is co-author of more than 500 research articles, reviews and book chapters and he supervised more than 50 Ph.D-theses. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and Foreign Associate Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences USA. He is the holder of doctorates honoris causa from the Semmelweis University in Budapest, the University of Gent, the University of Uppsala, the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Hoshi University in Tokyo, the University of London and the University of Montréal. He also received several other scientific distinctions. He was vice-president of the governing Board of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for 5 years. He is a member of the Dutch Innovation Platform that is chaired by the Prime Minister and he is vice-president of the League of European Research Universities.
